Yet another thread from me, for I am in a talkative mood, plus if I leave I have to walk home, and can't be arsed yet.

So this is a thread for both humility and boasting.

What do you think you know a lot about? Particularly unusual things.
What would you like to know more about? " " "

If enough people say things that crossover, we can share interesting nuggets of facts, or know in future who to ask.

In true nerd-fan style, I have an encyclopedic knowledge of the Discworld novels.* Mastemind banned it as a specialist subject, you know. I also know all (and I mean all) TDC lyrics off by heart :-D. I have a nice set of knowledge about classic film noir. Er... I'm pretty good with Russian history from 1850 onwards. In other news, and to a lesser degree: religion - Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Bahá'í, ancient Greek, Egyptian, Roman and Norse; Nintendo gaming from the NES onwards; stargazing; superstitions related to theatre; how to know whodunnit within half an hour without fail; pure mathematics...

Quote:

Digital photography, and how to achieve the best results with it.
History: Japanese, Chinese, Middle Eastern, African, and everything 1950s onwards
Music theory
Sikhism
Dance music and how to mix it

An admirable ambition, If. A thirst for knowledge is very attractive.

I guess I'd better share.

I know a lot about:
chivalry in the later middle ages, late medieval England (particularly women, marriage and employment), 19th century Iran, Shakespeare, Marlowe, and several other writers of the period, 20th century American literature, Greek and Roman mythology, Arthurian legend (I'm a fanatic), and the formation of English identity in the medieval period (cf Matter of England romances), 19th century English fiction, the genre of medieval romance, early empire Roman history and life.

All weird things!

I'd like to know how to make my lj look pretty through html, more about science, more foreign languages, various ancient languages, archaeology and art.

I can't think of anythign i really know a lot about.
Things i would like to know aobut, hmm.
Mythology and stuff like that, particularly in old civilizations, i.e. Eygpt, the Romans etc. Not even sure if mythology is the right word for it.
Languages, would love to speak several languages.
Drawing/painting/art, i really would like to be able to do good drawings more than most things in this world.
That's all i can think of off the top of my head.

Well, sticks, mythology is right if you mean the stories they told. Otherwise, history/archaeology?

You know a fair bit about computers, surely!

Know: Macs, insects, HTML, CSS, web design, music, hypnotherapy, ...erm, that's it, I think. I know lots of bits of things. I'd love to be an expert on something.

Would like to know: PHP and MySQL (work things), and anything else. Sometimes I get quite depressed about how much there is in the world, and how little I know of it. I love reading non-fiction and watching documentaries on TV.

Oh, yeah, I forgot that I know a lot about British heraldry in the Middle Ages, and how it relates to modern coats-of-arms...

Well, I have two degrees in archaeology, so in theory I should know something about that (particularly the late bronze/early iron ages in northern Europe).

Other topics I can offer expert advice on:

Vikings
horses (breeds, history and so forth)
14th century Britain
spas
Gilbert & Sullivan

It's a bit of an odd mix. I'd like to know more about Dutch-colonial era New York.

Sticks, this is a fantastic site: http://www.pantheon.org/areas/mythology/europe/roman/articles.html

I could just start talking about mythology, but it's pretty big, so pick an area (like incest/murder/creation/love) or a god (eg Zeus) and I'll plug away for you. Smile

So do I. I have a difficult time retaining information, though.

I guess I know a lot about opera, but I should, & would like to, know more. I know a lot about the job I do.

I'd like to know more about a lot of things. So many things, in fact, it's overwhelming & sometimes depressing. Which is maybe why I don't know more. I'd like to know more about history, art, politics, astronomy. The list goes on...

If anyone knows where I can get a rhyming translation of Ovid's Metamorphoses, I'd like to hear. Erm, this one:

Hmm, I have a vague memory of something, Unry, but it doesn't spring to mind. However, you can get *parts* of the Meta in verse form quite easily. Was popular in the 17th century. I think Marlowe's Hero and Leander is taken from it tho I could be confusing that with something else Ovid did.

* * * A song about knowledge. Excuse. * * *

I see the people working and see it working for them,
And so I want to join in, but then I find it hurts me.
Some say that knowledge is something sat in your lap
Some say that knowledge is something that you never have
I see the people happy, so can it happen for me?
'Coz when I am unhappy, there's nothing that can move me.
Some say that knowledge is something that you never have
Some say that knowledge is something sat in your lap
Some say that heaven is hell, some say that hell is heaven.
I must admit, just when I think I'm king...I just begin

I've been doing it for years, my goal is moving near,
It says "Look I'm over here," then it up and disappears.
Some say that knowledge is something sat in your lap
Some say that knowledge is ho ho ho ho.
I want to be a lawyer, I want to be a scholar,
But I really can't be bothered, ooh just
Gimme it quick, gimme it, gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme.

Hey I'm gonna take it all when I'm king,
In my dome of ivory, a home of activity,
I want the answers quickly, but I don't have no energy,
I hold a cup of wisdom, but there is nothing within,
My cup she never overfloweth and 'tis I that moan and groaneth,
Some grey and white matter,
(Give me the Karma Mama
A jet to Mecca, Tibet or Jeddah,
To Salisbury, A monastery,
The longest journey, across the desert,
Across the weather, across the elements, across the water)

I didn't see the "interesting" bit!

You know, I always have problems when people ask me what I like, what I'm "into". I'm interested in everything, curious in everything. Life is often a wonderland full of beauty and horror for me. Just, everything. Everything is bewildering.

I should go to bed now.

Rachel, for you and pertaining to your interest in science...

The bacterium which causes syphilis is a corkscrew shape and physically bores through cells. In the late stages of syphilis, the fleshy extremities, such as nose and penis, fall off because the tissues are so riddled, with millions upon millions of the bacteria, that the cells structures become compromised and are unable to hold together...

Do I win a prize?
