No doubt everybody has the "Live At The Palladium" DVD by now. Has anybody else noticed how far down in the mix the backing vocalist is? Like, non-existent? I was at the Liverpool gig the night before, and one of the best things was the way the backing vox interacted with Neil's. Clearly, from the DVD, Neil & the camera crew think the same, as there are moments where both defer to the backing singer and we get close up shots of her doing her bit, like on Sticks & Stones. Only trouble is...you can't hear her!!! It rather spoils the whole thing. Fiddling with the audio options does nothing to solve this. Similarly, in When The Lights Go Out Over Europe, Neil reads a bit from his book, but all we get on the DVD is a bit of vague mumbling in the background! Bit crap for a professionally released DVD...

I agree completely. I'm not too impressed with the DVD overall, to be honest. The sound quality isn't great, and I've tried the 5.1, DTS and Stereo options with the same result. I think the entire DVD production leaves a lot to be desired - it's badly filmed and badly edited, and as I was at the show it's a real disappointment to see how it's turned out, even with the novelty value of seeing myself several times.

I think the Palladium DVD is beautifully shot, in particular the shot from behind Neil where he is framed against the audience as "Sunrise" builds towards its conclusion. And it sounds spiffy through my system. More extras would have been nice, but the actual concert itself is a treat IMHO.

I agree that it looks great, and that the sound in general is fine, but the backing singer really is far too low in the mix. I can imagine her buying the DVD and inviting her mum, nan and aunt round to watch it, only to be greeted by sounds of "I can't hear you, dear". I bet she's sorely disappointed that she worked so hard but is barely audible!

Do you recall Dexys Midnight Runners performing Jackie Wilson Says on TOTP in the early 80's infront of a picture of the darts player Jockie Wilson?

Well it looks as if lessons haven't been learnt from that famous faux pas...

Or has the bloke who got sacked for putting the wrong program into the RAH sound system now got a job at this website.

I agree with you guys. When her voice does come out, though, it's ace.

Although, isn't there the same problem with Hilary Summers on the Commuter Love recording on Fin? You can really hear her back the guitar solo on the live Rarities version, but on the recording it's melded in so seamlessly it's actually barely audible.

The punctuation in the thread title is all screwed up. You meant:

This is true. I didn't even notice her on the album version - I thought it was just a guitar solo. It was only when I'd heard the Rarities version and came back to the album version that I realised she was on there as well.

I know this is an old thread, but I thought I would add my 2pennies.

When I saw Divine Comedy at the Palladium I was about 4 rows from the front (those frequent shots of a guy with long blonde hair and sunglasses was my partner btw...the camera man seemed to take a shine to him!) and we found the backing vocals to be both inaudible and annoying. I'm quite happy that I can't hear them on the DVD, but I'm sorry that it is not the experience you remember at Liverpool, Dix.

Thom, are you being sarcastic? Wink

Yeah, they must have done, because I remember him saying after that "I bet they cut this in the final edit, but I bloody hope they don't!" Or something along those lines.

Shame. Sad

I thought she was yes, although my guy didn't agree with me. He really hated her and her vocals! I know I am a woman and another of them to say this, but I did find her voice sounded inexperienced and bland - I am also a trained singer and can say this with confidence, so it is not jealously. I wouldn't have cared if the backing singer was female/male, pretty/ugly, fat/thin, I just would have liked someone that complimented and held Neils voice well, and we both felt that she didn't.

Well, I thought her voice is fine, but then again I am not a trained singer--though I can belt out a good tune in the shower or in the car!! Anyway, I think she's very beautiful and would move to England if she asked me to! Wink

I think she served as an excellent complement to Neil's voice. The person who mixed the DVD obviously agrees with you though. Smile

Are you a lady?

I am a lady and I HATED her dress! We both couldn't stop laughing at the fact that the lighting was making her look like a chandellier or lamshade!

I'm not being judgemental, but it's just not my taste. Smile

Look I know this is quite an old post , but I just have to say that I never really understood this post...

The backing vocals to me are perfect ,
I do have an expensive amp and speakers etc.
could that be the difference maybe???

There is not one dvd in the world that has the perfect sound quality, some come very close, but depending on your installation, it can sound different everytime.
Playing around with the soundsettings can do wonders (well maybe not wonders, but it can improve the sound).
Don`t play the bass too heavy, it drowns the vocals.

Just some tips from someone who might have worked in the audio/video world.

Sod sound quality, I thought she was pretty weak all round. I sing too so don't start. I want to be Neil's backing singer, maybe I shall hang out in Dublin 6 and sing under windows until he realises how good my harmonies on "When the Lights Go Out All Over Europe" are, then allows me to make my debut with full orchestra in the Olympia. Or better, in the Folies Bergeres.

Thought her dress was interesting, she managed to pull it off though. What I really admired were the sandals she was wearing, very 1940s...

I agree that she didn't sound terribly loud.

But as I said when the DVD first came out, it's worth it for the slightly-pornographic closeups of her mouth at the microphone. Very Flake advert...

I sometimes play the DVD just like what I do to an audio CD, and the backing vocals really surfaces out.
