My five are:

Geronimo (such a complete song, absolute perfection!)

Your Daddy's Car (The best recording of this I've heard was on the B-side of the Becoming More Like Alfie Cassette single, it's a live performance from when Mark and Lard used to do a show at 10pm on Radio One, those were the days!)

The Summerhouse (I'm a sentimental soul)

Through a Long and Sleepless Night (I was obsessed with this song during a childhood holiday in Tenerife of all places. I would put on my sunglasses, my orange spongy headphones, a haughty look and I was ready to go, looking down my nose at the topless sunbathers and Stephen King readers)

Tonight We Fly (If Heaven doesn't exist, what will we have missed? This life is the best we've ever had)

I was curious to see if these choices were reflected in my Divine Comedy iTunes play count top five....the answer there is 'not really':

5. There is a Light That Never Goes Out (Smiths cover)
4. Geronimo
3. Tonight We Fly
2. Bleak Landscape
1. Bernice Bobs Her Hair (Fabulous song, but I'm really mystified as to how this became my top played Divine Comedy song.

1. Get me to a monastery
2. Bad ambassador
3. Lucy
4. Perfect Lovesong
5. The Certainty Of Chance

I love alot more of their songs, but these are my favourites. I'm sure at least one is someone's least favourite though.

1. Lucy (easily)
2. Commuter Love
3. Through a Long and Sleepless night
4. Becoming More Like Alfie (Can't listen to it less than three times in a row)
5. Miranda

Of course most of the songs mentioned in this thread will probably be my favourites by the time I hit the Submit button, but I'm not signing my life away here.

I've just browsed through this thread and was kind of surprised nobody included the French version of "Becoming more like Alfie" (the duett with Valerie Lemercier). Am I the only one out there who thinks this brilliant gem is the Arch-TDC-song?

Top five in order (I think)

1. Going downhill fast (vast oceans of air, that will mess up his hair - pure genius of imagery there)

2. Tonight we fly (spine tingly Royal Albert Hall moment)

3. If... (it's got "crap" in it)

4. Everybody knows (except you). (Love it.. despite the version on Stars in their Eyes some time ago)

5. Summerhouse (cos it's beautiful)

Referring across to the Survivor thread, I'm surprised there's no Casanova tracks there. Maybe it's more of a "holistic" album, rather than one with standout tracks. Maybe. Maybe not. Confused Confused

Woo, this thread's been dredged up from a long time back...

1- Sunrise
2- Eric The Gardener
3- Our Mutual Friend
4- Absent Friends
5- Songs Of Love

Was surprisingly simple, for me these 5 just stand out as totally and utterly perfect. The battle for places 6-10 is where I struggle, 'cos I descend into the "oh no but there's this...and this" mindframe. And it won't get me anywhere.

So hard to choose just 5 , but I'm gonna have to go with:

1: Something For The Weekend - Perfect on every level

2: Lady Of A Certain Age - ditto

3: If I Were You - that bit at the end where the whole orchestra kicks in and Neil's voice just soars ...

4: Tonight We Fly - Lovely with a capital 'L'

5: Mastermind - Beautifully written and sung

They could all change in a couple of days, of course, but for now, that's them

I've got to say in a whiney "aww I have a bit of a crush and it started because I met someone ages ago only once and now we're talking and there was this and blah blah" way that there are a handful of songs I've been listening to more than others lately...

1. Our Mutual Friend
2. The Certainty of Chance
3. Maryland Electric Rainstorm
4. Someone
5. The Booklovers (I have no idea why this became relevant)

I have a bit of a soft spot for Promenade....

5. Les Jours Tristes
4. A Lady of a Certain age
3. Geronimo
2. When The Lights Go Out All Over Europe
1. Tonight We Fly

The number one spot always stays the same, but the other four are forever changing depending on my mood.

I like changing my mind!

Simon, are these from a performers point of view, or purely for listening? I'm sure there must be differences!
