Hi

Does anyone else feel like me about this music?
It is so beautiful I felt as though I was floating in space and wanted to cry tears of joy.

I really love Laika's theme and its possibly my favourite track on the album. I have always enjoyed the instrumentals, my favourite being Europe By Train. I listen to them when I write, and it helps.

I think Leika was a business man who owned an airline, but I'm not really 100% sure.

*tries to work out if CPG is joking here or not*

Anyway, this is the Laika the song is about:

thehappygoth, Laika's story is told in AF. She was probably going woof when she neared the atmosphere.

And if not, she did on the way down. Wink

Sad but true.

A 'more intelligent than me' friend has just explained to me that Freddie Laker and Laika the space dog are not the same thing, and so I'm going to go crawl into a large hole and disappear for a little while. Excuse me....

OK here goes

Laika was a dog that the Russians sent up into space in the 60's.
Mind you I love the Freddie Laker train of thought. You're as off the wall as I am!
Anyway back to the point. They didn't tell anyone til afterwards that they had no means of getting her back. There was an outcry at the time. She probably didn't go woof on the way down as they gave her enough food for about 4 days but the rocket didn't come back until 6 days and burnt up on re-entry.
Still a good tune though. A good tribute I think.

There is a track on Scott 4 that sounds remarkably like this. Can't for the life of me remember the title as I've had a couple and it's only Monday lunchtime but there you go.........

Didn't they give her some poison so that she'd only last a while or sumat?! 'Cos they only needed to know what effect the space travel would have on her. Or maybe my Dad just told me that when I was little so I didn't get too upset. Confused

They gave her poison, with the last bit of food, actually.
So she was already dead when the thing got down

Actually, quite a waste for science.
What about the effect of going full speed in hte atmosphere for the organism ?

They had to wait until the american shuttle last year to find out... (fyi : the effect is something like "whoooosh")

I remember reading some other article that went into more detail saying the power cells in the cabin overheated or something.

I read last week that she died of fright on the way up. Made me pretty blue and slightly queasy.

I think it's absolutely beautiful as well. For me it captures the mood of the title perfectly. It's like a poem without words.

It's beautiful indeed. As I was walking through Gare du Nord in Brussels I remembered what it was, it's a bit elevator-ish.

Compliments of Lilypod from another Laika thread.

awww.

I have stories about those poor monkeys that NASA sent into space.
Also, the so-so movie Project X, addressed the same issue.

I remember watching an episode of Quantum Leap once where Sam jumped into one of the space chimps. Classic episode. Then again, was there an episode of Quantum Leap that wasn't great? I miss that programme.

I remember that one, and I enjoyed it very much, but looking back... is that a nutty show or what?
