A review from Metro this morning:

"Following a misguided foray into indie drab-rock, Neil Hannon here rediscovers his Cuban-heeled footing with this velveteen walnut swirl of a tune. Welcome back, skinny-boy. That's the beautifully sad-sigh voice of Lauren Laverne piping on the chorus, dontchaknow."

4/5 stars.

Well, already been to HMV and got a copy (have to wait a couple of days for the vinyl though). Seems all our ideas of what Idaho might maybe possibly sound like were well off - it's completely different to any of the live versions! Would love to know the list of instruments used on that song. You can understand why it's a B-side and not on the album.

Girl Least Likely's quite nice as well. And another version of Come Home Billy Bird! Yay! I like this new Divine Comedy era. You take a song that we know, you change the arrangement and it sounds different and great for a whole new set of reasons. Only one week to go until a ton of new tracks..... Smile

Bought my two copies from Virgin, made it to and from town in record time. I shall now put them into the CD drive and listen away - Ken Bruce just played 'Absent Friends', hence the slight delay.

When scanning the singles shelves did anyone else notice that the cover for Alex Parks' new single is almost exactly the same as the covers for CHBB? That could be an unfortunate mistake for any less-than alert DC fans.

Going to run to HMV* on me lunchbreak.

*Did you ever play the game at school when you tried to think up amusing explanations for initials or acronyms you didn't know the meaning of? The best one we came up with for HMV was "Homosexual? Mmmm, Very!" No wonder we never got any...

Yeah, they weren't "Very" enough for our strict entrance exams (if you'll pardon the expression).

The new version of Idaho is fabulous, but, as has already been said, is in a notably different style to the album. Billy Bird demo is great in a 'I remember when it used to sound like that' kind of way.
Girl Least Likely is, er, good. Nothing too immediate about it, but I imagine it's a grower. It's certainly not an instant gem.
All Things is the really odd one here. Out of all of the B-sides it did the least for me. It's an animal version of The Booklovers, but with half the quality. It's some kind of bastardised version of All Creatures Great and Small, which, coupled with Sticks and Stones, makes you wonder where Neil is getting his inspiration from these days. The music's good, but the weirdly lame lyrics combined with an odd computerised voice listing the animals didn't really sit right with me. Anyhoo, will no doubt love them all within a week.

The B-sides sound quite 'Regeneration-ey' to me, but that's ok. They're lovely, although the true star is still CHBB. That song seems to get even better with each listen.

Haven't got the 7" so can't comment on 'All Things'.

Yep, CD1 does have one of those 'DON'T PAY MORE THAN £2' stickers on it, so there's no excuses from anyone! Or else!

That's moments like this i hate most: UK fans have all the singles while some of us now must wait our import orders to arrive... (mine will probably come by friday or so...together with the album then..)

I won't even get the chance to bouy the CD today. Sad However, I'll be buying it at the airport tomorrow (fingers crossed) which seems curiously appropriate...

I was walking past a van along Bailgate and my ears heard a little something, so imagine my delight when I heard 'Absent Friends' playing! Very Happy

Idaho playing now, and I managed to get the last 7" too! Clever me Smile

*sympathises with Lazarus*

Me being in the back of beyond, I don't think mine will be arriving today either - the record shop said it probably wouldn't, grr. And me not keeping up with the news, I didn't know there was a 7" *hides face in shame*

Anyway, a happy day to all!

It's a brilliantly rousing song, innit? Next week can't come soon enough!

I've had to order the 7" from the HMV website, Virgin didn't have it. Still, t'was only 99p, can't complain (well, apart from the fact that I won't be able to play it).

Only got the 2-track one from Woolworth's cos that's all they had - can't wait to get home and listen to Idaho. Plus they had the new Travis single, so it's a good day for me - not often that there's two singles in one week that I'd actually pay money for. Certainly not from the choice of singles that Woolworth's stocks (Indie = bad! Someone who was on TV with a rubbish cash-in single = Good!), anyway.

My Woolworths only had the two track single, as well. So I went to Virgin which had both (although not the 7").

Woolies had placed it at No. 19 in their chart.

Got my copy from HMV just now - bought the one with the video and demo on it, but the others were there too. May get them later in the week, depending on finances.

I stand by my non-single-buying stance. Even though the B sides do sound interesting...

Razz

Singles just annoy me. I can only remember buying about 3 in my whole life. If I like an artist, I buy their album, so why have the same song twice? OK b sides are cool, but nyeh. Not worth fiddling with piddly cds that are over almost as soon as you put them on!

Fair enough, I suppose. I only buy singles by Neil these days, and only ever got about a dozen or so others during the course of my life.

Come to the linen cupboard anyway? Wink

Done my bit, bought the two CDs from HMV today. The demo version brings back some memories of Edinburgh Queens Hall...

Mmm... nostalgia.

Indeed. That's four copies sold in South Devon.

I thhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhank you.

Whacked the CD in my car as soon as I finished work and drove through the town centre with Billy Bird on a very high volume.

I had the windows up of course. I'm not a complete scally.

Mr Nude, I think we should buy our copies of Absent Friends at exactly the same time, so we can both queue up with our albums and pretend that everybody wants one.

Me, as an atypical london commuter, 'cept I'm not rude or shovy, got well and truley "Come Home Billy Birded" today.

The review in Metro that Gerdie has quoted, and two big poster ads in Holborn station, one in not so good a position at the bottom of the piccadilly line platform exit, and one in a position that every person going through Holborn cannot fail to miss at the top of the escalator on the first level up.

I've not gonna buy the single though, don't want CHBB being one of those album tracks I skip cos I've heard it too much already and worn it out.
