It would be a really helpful thing if you contacted the radio shows which have already played "Come Home Billy Bird". The more feedback they get the better. So tell them how much you liked hearing it or were sad you missed it and want the chance to hear it again! Part of the battle with all radio play is making the stations realise that the fans are hearing and wanting the songs to be played. It truly helps us working from the other side (as it were!).

So please, please, please do contact all the DJs you have heard play the record, including Lauren Laverne at Xfm, Mark & Lard at BBC Radio 1, Stuart Maconie at BBC Radio 2 & Donna Legge at BBC Radio 1 Northern Ireland. I know Babs Magoo has played a stirling part on this already and that's great. However, please take it easy on that kind of correspondence as too much may backfire Confused Smile

You are all s and your Help is much appreciated Very Happy

Contacting radio stations is something we should be doing all the time!

We tried to get a propaganda programme up and running last year, but with little (or next to) no support.

Glad to see there may be a concerted effort by the fans here to get Neil and his genius on the air!

Does Lauren Laverne really need any persuading to play the new record on XFM?

I'm sure she doesn't, but whether her bosses do or not is a completely different thing. DJs might have SOME influence over what they play, but are greatly restricted by playlists that come from their bosses. If stations get lots of E-mails from people saying "I want to hear this song!" then they're more likely to get on the playlist. It's not sneaky, it's what we want. I'd switch from my usual station (Century FM) to Radio 2, Virgin or whatever if they started playing TDC, so why shouldn't we start asking for it?

I E-mailed Century FM today and told them that I think CHBB should be on their station, I think it'd fit well. I'll do the same for Radio 2 and Virgin over the next couple of days. Everyone else should do this too. If we can get the band just a couple of plays then other people might hear and like it and hopefully the effect will snowball.

Sent dumbo message to Stuart Maconie.

"Was in my car last week and you played a track, not sure what it was called but the chorus had a woman on it, something about a football game at the end?

Anyway it was mighty fine. Any chance of hearing it again?"

Nothing ventured....

Methinks you might gain a lazy DJ rooting out Baddiel, Skinner & The Lightning Seeds' "Three Lions".

Amen to that...

I'll do a little tour of the radio station websites at some point tomorrow and fire some off. So to speak.

I was obsessed with Five Live from about the summer of 2002 (World Cup time) until last November (clock radio and car radio simultaneously broke, God's way of telling me to listen to more music and less Matthew Bannister). I texted shows frequently and then would listen to see if they would read it out. After an hour or so I'd be bursting for a pee and run to the loo and back in case I missed my big moment.

The closest I got was when they read out what I'd said but quoted another listener. It was about the best way to put on shoes.

Sometimes I didn't wash my hands.

E-mail Ken to say that you want to hear The Divine Comedy anyway! Ask for their new song! I already have done, I asked if he'd stick it on next week, especially if they don't win today. Not really a Radio 2 listener myself, but I'm gradually being won over. If they stay playing CHBB, I'll be switched.

Yup indeedy.

I reckon we should e-mail Jonathan Ross too, to see if he'll play it, as he probably would.

Oh yeah, and Wogan is off next week, so maybe we should give Richard Allinson (I think that's who's replacing him) a go.

Janice Long is another who likes DivCom but hasn't played Billy Bird yet (not to the best of my knowledge, anyway. She'd be worth a try!

I just emailed Brucey (Ken, I mean, not Mr Forsyth).

It is - I got a standard reply back (saying stuff like 'look at the site for track listings' and 'sorry we can't give any more information on records'. So God knows if they pay any attention to emails.

(shhhh, does anybody else prefer that 99 red ballons gets played?)

I used to play 99 Red Balloons on my trumpet. I also used to play Nik Kershaw's Won't Let The Sun Go Down On Me. I had a book of popular hits of the day scored for trumpet. Can't remember what else I used to play from it though. Anyway, I gave up playing the trumpet a long time ago - about the time I found more interesting reasons to pucker up...

But to get back on topic... I got an email asking me to vote (as I suppose everyone did) but it arrived in my inbox at about three minutes to 12, which was a bit short notice.

However!

Since I had been listening to 6music that morning (as I tend to do all day every day while trapped at my desk) I had already heard the very same song that we were being asked to vote on, played by Gideon Coe on his mid-morning show. No need for competition, he just recognised that the song deserved to be played anyway. Spooky coincidence too.

Not that long ago, Gideon Coe also played Berniece Bobs Her Hair - entirely without provocation. Which is great. And to be honest, I'd rather listen to Gideon Coe than Ken Bruce any day, regardless of whether or not he plays Divine Comedy records.

He said this morning that he's got something big lined-up (or something along those words) with The Divine Comedy before the end of the spring. I wonder what that is? Live set? Neil doing 'Tracks of My Years'? Any info, Claire?

Yeah... he doesn't normally do live sets on his show, does he? Could very well be 'Tracks...'.

Do you know who it was that wrote in about TDC anyway? Was it anyone off this board?

Yes, Neil is likely to be appearing on Ken Bruce's show soon. It's not confirmed yet, but an interview and a session of some sort might well be on the cards. Will be back with details when it's certain (don't want to rub any lamps!)

Thanks Claire! I could sense the disappointment in Ken's voice when 'Nena' won the vote the other day. This must be his way of making it up to Neil! Very Happy

Wooyay! If I could find a reference to that fact on the Radio 2 website I'd email said page to all and sundry, but I'm damned if I can. Does that mean it'll be on the playlist as well?

Going slightly off-topic, the Radio 2 playlist is slightly odd, is it not? I can't imagine a list that carries both Westlife and Belle & Sebastian in their A-list, but there we go. Will Billy Bird make the A-list, do we think?
