Woo! The Divine Comedy are playing at the Glasgow Barfly on March 4th, according to here.

It's part of this: http://www.musicpassport.org/
Here's the original press release:
TRAVIS, ASH and THE POLYPHONIC SPREE are amongst the acts confirmed to be playing a series of intimate 'BACK TO THE BARS' gigs to raise money for the SHELTER and WAR CHILD charities.

‘Passport: Back To The Bars’ is a series of six nights of shows at Barfly venues across the UK taking place from March 1 to 6 next year. Each gig will feature some of the biggest names in music playing 200-500 capacity shows in Cardiff, Exeter, Glasgow, Liverpool, London and York, XFM reports.

Britain's biggest DJs will also be playing sets prior to each gig and also at each aftershow party.

People wishing to go to the gigs pay £2 to send a text or make a phone call to enter a 'draw' to win a pair of 'passports' to that artist's show. Also five pairs of the passes for each show will be retained and auctioned online to the highest bidder over a two-month period.

The draw and auction will raise money for the events two main charity beneficiaries War Child and Shelter.

The artists booked so far are Travis, Badly Drawn Boy, David Gray, Elbow, Ash, The Polyphonic Spree, Gabrielle and Big Brovaz.

More acts are expected to be confirmed over the next few months, and details of the exact venues and line ups will be announced closer to the event.'

Excellent!

I like this bit though:

"...will feature some of the biggest names in music ..."

>The Cure London

They'll be glad of someone turning up to one of their gigs anymore

and

>Atomic Kitten Liverpool

They did a christmas do I went to!

Fab news though.. in fact, thinking about it - we should be hearing some proper tour news soon, surely? Two months to the album release and no word...

Aye, indeed - it's gonna be a struggle to get to these gigs, perhaps easier as it's in Glasgow, more DC fans in Engerland, perhaps Smile

It should certainly mean the Spree will be doing more gigs, and maybe it'll kick off a tour for Neil?

ah ok, that makes sense then Very Happy i've not been there then.

i don't understand the competition of the mirror's:

'HOW TO GET A TICKET

All you have to do is text the answer to the following question to 83003 (83200 for Virgin Mobile), followed by the name of the act you want to see.

Which group of venues will be presenting Passport: Back To The Bars from March 1-6?

1. Barfly

2. Flyguy

3. Sky High

Phone lines open January 26 and will close February 20 2004. Texts cost £1.50 plus the network provider's text charge. All correct answers will be collected and the winners will be randomly selected.

Winners will be notified on February 22 and sent a code number. They will need to bring this code and their passport or a valid form of photo ID with them to gain access to the gig.'

does the code allow you to go to any of the gigs, as it doesn't seem to specify? and eep, i don't think i have any valid forms of photo id anymore. do seven-years-out-of-date passports still count?

I know where Barfly in Glasgow is, my friend's boyfriend's band plays there a lot. Good venue, very intimate though! It's pretty small. It used to be the music venue for 13th Note, very near the Clyde.

Be careful about texting, guys. I'm guessing it's all computer processed so vagueness will mean disqualification.

Therefore, make sure you text Barfly The Divine Comedy to that number, rather than just Barfly Divine Comedy, as I'm guessing that won't work.

Also, is this for pairs of tickets or just single tickets?

I've entered with both "The Divine Comedy" and "Divine Comedy"; if by any remote chance that I should win, the other ticket will be up for grabs to any one of you kind, kind people. Smile

Smile

Can I officially put my name on the list of Scottish bbers wanting to go? I'll send off a few more texts the next time I top up my phone and get my family to do the same so that I feel that I'm making an effort, not just leaching free tickets off of people.

Just noticed this:

You can enter the competition several times for the same or for different shows but subject to a maximum of 20 entries from any single mobile phone number. You must have the bill payer’s permission to send the texts!

Steal the phones of your family, friends and colleagues!

Just be careful, £1.50 a time is likely to put a right dent in your wallet.

*Except for Pip's, so he can 'phone as often as he likes Wink *

It's a wonderful little place. It does make me wonder about the format of this gig though; the album's meant to be all orchestral and what have you and surely there's not going to be a helluva lot of space for string quartets, is there?

I would think so... I believe that the Regen stuff was all announced at the end of January so it should be any day now. Claire....?

I've been looking at accommodation options for those of you travelling a fair distance and, I'm afraid to say, they're not terribly good (I'm afraid Neil didn't schedule his gig as well as he did the last time, and my parents aren't conveniently away on holiday, so no empty). There's no shortage of hotels, but they can be rather pricey. Glasgow's youth hostels have a rather awful reputation. However, there are a couple of places that have a good reputation.

Bunkum Backpackers

McLay's Guest House

For the more affluent among you, there's tons of hotel listings for Glasgow on the web, so I won't bother putting stuff here.

Ok - I've got a couple of handsets, and entered ten times on both. Weird thing is, both phones would only let me send exactly ten - then just kept saying "message failed" - I'll try again in the morning.

(the first two entries won't count either - as for some inexplicable reason, I typed 'flyguy' before I realised) Embarassed

EDIT: It's letting me send more again now!

I'll carry on..

I think I've said before.. if you take the amount of sense first, it doesn't take an awful lot of money!!

It's stopped accepting them again after I sent two more.. I guess it's just their end is a bit dodgy.

Well I entered...absolutely no clue how I would get to Glasgow though. I'm a poor South England boy you see.

Ah screw it, I've found my way through the untamed wilds of south Wales, I'm sure I can get to Glasgow for one gig.

Chill, folks, it's only the first day! No point in bankrupting yourselves!

Pali - if you really want to come up here for the gig (tickets and deities willing!) then we'd be more than happy to see you. Keep an eye on train prices, you can often get quite good deals if you're travelling all the way from the south of England to Glasgow.

Universal* - Aww, it's a shame you live so far away. I'd love to meet you!
