Blimey! Sticks and Stones sounds an awful lot like Scott Walker, doesn't it?

This may sound odd, but....

So far I only have Billy Bird. This is entirely because I want the rest of the album to be a surprise. And it's wonderful. However, it does smack of his Walkerness.

Isn't it wonderful to have Neil back to his double-voice-tracking best?

Of all the tracks I have, I love all two of them - Leaving Today is heart wrenching stuff, utterly enchanting. As dramatic as anything on Fin but with more...what's the word?...soul(?)

Billy Bird still confuses me. It's been public domain on this board for years and has evolved, similarly, through public performances. The Canvey version was a rocky, almost bluesy number - the RFH version (the one I thought Neil would go for) was a feisty orchestral song.

The final version has evolved, yet again, into an acoustic uptempo Radio2 friendly 'single' - similar in feel to Becoming More Like Alfie. The first time I heard it I was slightly ho-hum about it, but with repeated playings I'm falling for it like some rich, widowed buxom wench.

In fact, it could easily make the top ten.

Not downloading anymore though. I've tasted the filling now I'll wait for the pie.

ok.jason,magnus and whoever else has heard the whole album,here are my SPOILY quests;

did u feel that 'absolute power','idaho','smiler' had a place in it and it was a mistake to exclude them?

is 'our mutual friend' and 'happy goth' as unrecognisable in their new version as 'billy bird' turned out to be?

which were your fave/poo tracks?

was Neil's singing UP in a Casanova/Fin/ASAAL way at last or it was slowed DOWN in a Regeneration way and the album was downtempo too?

... happy goth sounds a little like it did with the band version but the prechorus is all different rhymically.. very 60's ish lke perfect lovesong or soemthing...

our mutual freind.. haha.. ..no guitars..and the end of the song they do what they did at the end of someone.. the percussion ideas sound very 60s.. a simple bass drum and tamborine.. very stacatto feel. the song is the same though

this is one of the weirdest albums ive ever heard.. reminds me of fin cuz of the strings.. but man.. so many instruemnts used all over the place...

ive been listeing to the live versions of these songs for too long ... i wouldnt have done certain songs the way neil had done them ...like our mutual friend was good as a rock number ... but the arrangements will grow on me.

key lines to describe the album are... strings are fun.....neil ditches pop.....for once....and what a voice...
you know what this album remind sme of..remember when neil did that show where he sung the good life and if u go away etc....lots of the songs remind me of that show

i agree with jason.
i cant stop listening to the stuff
its like scott walker in very many ways and a lot of the stuff is not what i would call 60's- in fact more 40's and 50's croon
many of the songs sound awfully like matt monroe - if confused seek out the original version of thje italian job and listen to the opening song called on days like these - neils vocals sound like monroes in this song
many of the songs are radio 2 esque youll not find many (if any at all) electric guitar parts
i cant wait till its released not in a small part cause neils releasing billy bird for my birthday! how thoughtful

That's not the only song. Leaving Today, Absent Friends do sound a lot like Scott Walker too.
Needless to say that it's miiiillles away from Regen.

To be completely honest I did love that rocky Regen sound , I'm gonna miss that.

I crumbled but don't worry about it I will buy it.

I believe the songs to be utterly magnificent and hopefully better when uncompressed and in rich stereo.

Sticks And Stones is fantastic, makes up for the lack of Absolute Power. Hey I've forgotten about it already.

My thoughts exactly!!!
It does reflect a lot in the singing, and the kinda crooner à la Scott Walker arrangements (god I'm talking bullshit) Wink

yeah it's mono.
though I think the album has a nice flow to it, re: running order and all in that form I sure hope he adds some stuff cos 45 minutes is deffo too short for an album. (yet I know he said he did a "long player" and not a "cd")

Are these lyrics correct or can anyone spot any blundering errors.

Struggled with the verse on Absent Friends going on about Laika, who I now know to be the first dog in space.

Or am I kidding myself.
