I don't think I'm alone in being a bit saddened that people have heard bits of the album two months early - I was rather looking forward to the feeling of unity on March 29th on this board...

But still, I for one will be resisiting all knowledge of Absent Friends until I can put it in my CD player and listen to it properly...

I'm attempting to stay spoiler free, and would very much appreciate it if those who *have* heard new album tracks and wish to discuss them could post a big *SPOILER* alert at the start of posts/threads.

Noted.

I don't mind listening to computer files of it beforehand because I'll be buying the album / singles etc so I'll it doesn't matter one way or another for me.

I just want to keep the element of surprise. In an age where I know what will be under the Christmas tree and that my hair will only be getting greyer, I like to have a little element of the unexpected to cherish.

Besides, if one little MP3 can make me grin and be generally happy for hours on end like the Billy Bird one has after the utterly awful blues I've had recently, I think the leaks are justified.

Well, you might be pleasantly surprised. It's certainly a lot different from recent stuff.

Incidentally, I watched the pilot for Twin Peaks last night. Intreguing. I shall set about watching the rest of the series with gusto.

Hmmmm. I shall reserve judgment.

Good stuff. I recommend doing like I did and watch the entire run in the space of just over five days. I had the whole lot on video and once I'd started I just couldn't stop...

I'm afraid I for one won't be able to resist the inevitable round of promos that'll start circulating presumably next month. And if someone was to accidentally give me access to pre-release tracks (via my new email address, for example - so as not to compromise the BB ), then I'm sure I'd happily give them a listen. Very Happy

I dunno- I really want to hear the new stuff because we've been waiting for such a long time and I'm very excited about the new album... but I think it might spoil the anticipation if I heard any of it before I got the album. It's been a long wait, so why rush? I like the sense of anticipation and exciement Smile

It's just sad Sad

I want the album, the artwork, the sleeve notes... I want to feel how the album runs together - why Neil decided to put which tracks in what order. I want to know what colour the CD is.

I don't want x number of kilobytes, with a filename and a winamp icon on my desktop....

I want a Divine Comedy CD sat in my CD rack, or on my passenger seat.

>Well, no-one's forcing you to listen to it in advance.

Yeah.. You're right..

It's not on though. Regardless of what people say though (and I KNOW this isn't ALWAYS the case) , lots and lots and lots of people won't go out and buy the CD... besides - the tracks will be old news tothem by the time it comes out.

I'm not talking diehard fans such as here, I'm talking about potential new fans.. A promo copy or a couple of tracks is an entirely different matter from grabbing an entire album...

Poor Neil. Sad

It feels a lot closer to home when it happens to an artist that you really, genuinely want to be commercially successful.

Nothing can ever replace buying the actual cd, you're right, there's something more meaningful about a physical object. Probably why God isn't that popular these days, he's been replaced by the invisible and seemingly omnipotent binary. But that's a discussion for another time and as a result I'm definitely gonna leave myself some surprises for when the albums actually released.

Please note, this isn't an indication of the quality of what I have actually heard, in fact that's making it harder.

If anybody from this board doesn't go and buy the CDs but instead downloads it all from the net they are, officially, arses.

Indeed.. and it's not just that.. anyone dropping by the website to see what the Divine Comedy are up to too! There's probably ten fold more people read this site than contribute, and advertising the availability online is just wrong... Sure people can and will go off and find it themselves regardless if they want to - but advertising the fact.. well.. anyhow.. it's just the way it is with the internet + the 'something for nothing' generation..

You sound so old! Razz

I wouldn't download a whole album, only a song, to see if I liked it. But I know I'll be buying TDC's new album anyway, so I don't need to do that.

Yep, I know what you mean. I justify downloading Billy Bird to myself by the fact that I'll buy the 2 CD singles and the 7"/DVD/tape and get it on the various editions of the album that will come out....

Incidentally, I've not got any of the other tracks, though Jason did kindly offer. I don't want to spoil the new songs because, as Phil says, they've been written to be played in the order of the album and hearing them out of context would be awful. I wanted Billy Bird because I'm beginning to consider it to be "my" DC song: I was there when it was first performed, it's the last song that I played on guitar with John before he died, I strum it to various chumps.... I wanted to see the final product. The rest of the album can wait. Smile

It's fair enough to download if you plan on buying all the CDs anyway. But it's the people who'll just download it all for free... and then wonder, a year down the line, why artists like Neil aren't making any more music. Bastards.

Where are people getting the album from anyway? Must have been a major leak, surely?

its wierd, how on jonathon ross show he said "i think i'll call the album jacket required" no jacket required being a phil collins album of course, and then he goes and names it absent friends, which was a genesis track i believe?

I've equalised! 50/50 bring it on you cows.

I'm very much looking forward to the new album, two things annoy me, they being that the OFFICIAL DIVINE COMEDY WEBSITE seems to know less than any music website on the planet about the new album, well of course that's not true but as the people that run the website blew such a gasket about Amazon advertising Absent Friends, I thought they might have at least sought some exclusivity on releasing track listings, and people are now reviewing the album on it's own website two and a half months before it's released!

I've been awaiting this album for three fricking years and I'm just a bit peckish to hear it. At least give a few samples as you did with Regeneration! Come on you heartless bastards.

The second thing is cabbage.

coldn't agree more.let's have the same 'sampling'thing as with 'regeneration'exactly 3 years ago.and remember;there was no leak back then...i mean that what hapened these past days, makes it a necessity
for some tracks to be pre-aired.and,once more, the parlophone strategy of releasing an album that has already been delayed for almost a year(and many of it's tracks are old news,in their 'test' versions at least) 4 months after it's completion,is out of my logic, and 'helps' situations like this one, occur.

I didn't have the strength today to not look at the spoiler thread and that's already annoying me. I won't be downloading them. I didn't even like it when the Regeneration samples were officially available before the album came out. Gah. This is going to be avoidance hell: Trying to steer clear of discussions of the album for ten more weeks.

I remember before I had regular access to the internet patiently awaiting the release of Fin De Siecle (s**t I hope I spelt that right - very non DC if I haven't), nipping into town, buying it and then repeating it non-stop for hours.

I remember listening to Radio 1 all day to hear the first airing of Generation Sex on Mark and Lard, and being very happy for ages afterwards.

At least I don't have to listen to Radio 1 anymore, although I still do like Mark and Lard. I have no quarrel with them.

Actually I've forgotten who I'm quarrelling with.

Sorry.

I don't think that people who drop by the website on a very occasional basis are that likely to download the thing. Are there really that many people skulking around the website of a musician who's been pretty much out of the public eye lately, just waiting for the time when they can follow the breadcrumb trail to the latest releases? I think that most of the people here who are choosing to download it fall into the category of --> [starved and deprived] and will buy the album (and everything else) when it's released.
