How does it compare to the rest of Neil's catalogue??

I think my list is something like this....

Promenade
Fin de Siecle
Absent Friends
A Short Album About Love
Bang Goes The Knighthood
Casanova
Regeneration
Liberation
Fanfare For The Comic Muse
Victory For The Comic Muse

Good question!

Promenade
Fin de Siécle
Bang goes the knighthood
Casanova
Liberation
Victory for the comic muse
A short album about love
Regeneration
Absent Friends

Not heard fanfare. Boo. The first 3 and the last one are set. Everything else is a bit of a free for all.

It's the one I listen to least. I love Our Mutual Friend and think it's one of Neil's best songs, but the rest of the album doesn't do much for me. The Happy Goth? What were you thinking, Neil?!

BGTK has really impressed me. I think it's a really strong album - it feels like more of an album than Victory, which feels like a bunch of songs chucked together.

That's the reason I'll never be a fan of Victory, it's too much just like a jumble of songs... though it has the indescribably lovely Snowball in Negative, it's also got Diva Lady, which, lets be fair, is just pants.

Ok, Happy Goth isn't Neil's greatest ditty, but the whole album feels like a private concert, and it has Our Mutual Friend, Absent Friends and Charmed Life which are three of my favourite EVER songs Smile

Diva Lady is indeed rather poo. Yeah Victory is a weird one. There's some amazing songs on it but they don't fit together. It's a very odd album.

Gah! I forgot about Charmed Life. Lovely tune.

I LOVE Diva Lady AND Happy Goth. Absent Friends as an album is way up high on my list, but a pants song to me is Imaginary Friend, can't even listen to it.

Casanova
Absent Friends
Fin de Siecle
Liberation
Promenade
Regeneration
A Short Album About Love
Victory For The Comic Muse
Bang Goes The Knighthood
Fanfare For The Comic Muse

Yes, this low. In fact I find every album above the latest one very enjoyable, even the somewhat patchy VFTCM, but the latest one is so flat... I mean, it has 3 fantastic songs ("Down In The Street Below", "At The Indie Disco" and "Neapolitan Girl") and some good ones ("Assume The Perpendicular" and "I Like") but the rest are sooo uninspired. I just can't listen to banal lyrics of "When A Man Cries" or "The Lost Art Of Conversation", which also has really lame melody. Same goes for "The Complete Banker". The rest love songs are ok, I guess, but they don't diversify the album in any way and it starts to sound the same near the second half. All I want to say, you shouldn't write any silly songs ("Can You Stand?" and "Have You Ever?") when the album is already full of them.

Damn, even the previous album, which was marred by some dull moments, was way better than this one.

Long time DC fan, decided to sign up after the new album and also have my ticket for Somerset House in July. Haven't seen a "hello" post so Here I Am.

After 1 days of listening to BGTK (and it may go up or down with subsequent listenings and a dedicated session lying in bed with the lights off.) here's my list, from favourite to least:

Victory for the Comic Muse
Promenade
Liberation
Casanova
Fin De Siecle
Absent Friends
Ban Goes the Knighthood
Regeneration

And the rest haven't really listened to much.

There just don't seem to be the standout, beautifully layered, subtle songs as on other albums*, with too much jangly, too much witty. Feels a little like distilled DC, but the wrong flavour has come out.

For what it's worth:

1: Promenade
2: Casanova
3: Regeneration
4: Fin De Siecle
5: Liberation
6: Bang Goes The Knighthood
7: Victory For The Comic Muse
8: A Short Album About Love
9: Absent Friends
10: Fanfare (If I must)

Suggestion for a new thread: List every TDC song in order of preference!!

1 A short album about love
2 Promenade
3 Fin de Siecle
4 Absent Friends
5 Bang goes the Knighthood
6 Victory for the Comic Muse
7 Casanova
8 Liberation
9 Regeneration

This is hard, as Victory and Casanova both have tracks I love, and tracks I skip, whereas Liberation 'the sold all rounder' seems under valued...and I think on balance I prefer FDC to Promenade now...

ASAAL is my definite number 1 though!

My list:

1. Promenade (his most complete album)

2. Fin De Siecle (most underrated, awe-inspiring Joby Talbot arrangements and has 2 of Neil's best-ever songs in Commuter Love and Sunrise)

3. A Short Album About Love

4. Casanova

5. Regeneration (especially for Lost Property and Mastermind)

6. Liberation

7. Absent Friends (for the title track and Our Mutual Friend)

8. Victory For The Comic Muse (for Lady of a Certain Age and the fact I only ever skip one track, Diva Lady)

9. Bang Goes The Knighthood (at the moment it's only Down In The Street Below and When A Man Cries that I would rank amongst the top, say, 50 songs Neil has ever written. Have listened to the album a lot there are too many ordinary or unconvincing tracks)

10. Fanfare For The Comic Muse

I can see BGTK climbing up to 6th with further listens, but for me it's nowhere near Neil's best, I'm afraid.

1. Absent Friends (Just)
2. Promenade
3. A Short Album About Love
4. Casanova
5. Regeneration
6. Liberation
7. Bang Goes The Knighthood
8. Victory For The Comic Muse
9. Fin De Siecle
10. Fanfare For The Comic Muse

Very hard choices here because BGTK and VFTCM are both very strong albums as a whole but just too equal and fair as opposed to having some amazing songs.
Absent friends tops it I think because it combines being both a strong album and the sound of Neil at his best.
Sorry for the low positioning of FDS, but its only cos I don't know it as well as the others.

Hi, I'm a long time fan of Neil but I have to say I agree with zhilkin on this one. The new album is a massive let down for me, my ranking would be.

1.Promenade
2.Casanova
3.Liberation
4.Fin De Siecle
5.Absent Friends
6.Regeneration
7.A Short album About Love
8.Victory For the Comic muse

9.Bang Goes the Knighthood
10.Fanfare For the Comic Muse

I know some people think this is good return after Victory but I just don't think it compares. Apart from the opening track which is by far the best thing on there it's really lightweight and there's a lack of those classic epics like Lady of a Certain age, Count Grassi's Passage and Snowball in Negative. I'm really disappointed with the album lyrically too. I Like has a nice tune but is ruined by those listing lyrics which he also uses on Have you Ever Been in Love? Can you Stand up on one Leg? and At the Indie Disco. He is still one of the most consistent and brilliant artists of all time but after four years away I'm disappointed I'm listing the new album so low.

Promenade & Casanova
Bang Goes The Knighthood
Liberation
Absent Friends
A Short Album About Love
Fin De Siècle
Victory For The Comic Muse
Regeneration
Fanfare

Had there been bsides placed on albums instead of album tracks, my ranking would have been different.

Fin de Siecle

Casanova

A Short Album About Love
Bang Goes the Knighthood

I've never heard the first one, but Bang goes the Knighthood is bottom of the pile at the moment and it is a bit of a chore to get it out and play when there have been so many great things released recently.

well, i think i like it a lot, but i have small children and have heard about half of each song about twice (which may add up to a whole album...). i think it is a much more coherent album than victory, but victory did have ALOACA on it. maybe i shouldn't be posting until i've had a chance to listen properly. be back in about 20 years, then...

1- Liberation
2- Promenade
3- Casanova
4- Victory For The Comic Muse
5- Absent Friends
6- Regeneration
7- Fanfare For The Comic Muse
8- A Short Album
9- Fin De Siecle
10- Bang Goes The Knighthood

Undecided on that last one. On the first couple of listens it feels a bit shallow, especially from 'Have You Ever Been in Love' onwards. I'm likely to change my mind.

1-Regeneration - see im alone on this one but easily the most complete proper album he's made. Would have liked to see where the band could have gone after this rather than returning to his comfort zone with AF.
2-Promenade - another complete album, only 2nd when looked at no of favourite songs off this and Regeneration. Bad Ambassador wins it for Regen.
3-Fin - Sunrise probably the best song he'll ever write
4-Victory for the Comic Muse - a beautifully mixed album. Only a couple of disappointments (party fears two, Diva Lady - tho fantastic live) means its no 4.
5-Absent Friends - Our Mutual Friend peaks a solid album.
6-A Short Album about Love - Does what it says on the tin, which is its positives and negatives.
7-Bang Goes The Knighthood - Really enjoying the latest album and could keep going up.
8-Casanova - No opinion particularly either way, some great songs but 1-7 are better more stand out albums.
9-Liberation - reminds me most of BGTK, but a weaker version.
10-Fanfare - Not as bad as Neil makes out, just different. Obviously not the direction he wanted to go in but good for what it is.

All are great albums, this is just the order i would listen to them and have listened to them on long journeys (sometimes in reverse order to get the best last!)

Controversial maybe but hey its all about opinions right?

After a month or so, BGTK has moved up one slot above Absent Friends. Island Life, I Like and Assume the Perpendicular dragging it down for me.

Now, I know Victory is at the bottom, but I still jolly well like it, just not as much as the others. This is bloody hard. BGTK is very high up for me at the moment, I think it is very, very good indeed.

I am going to have to think carefully about this one. The thing about Victory is that it's a definite album of two halves - up to Party Fears Two. After that it changes feel entirely.

Victory for me is a classic old school album in that sense - it's designed to be played on vinyl (at least that's the feel I get).

Where are we now, six months from Bang's release? Enough time for the launch hype to have worn off, and I still love it - I'd definitely put it in the Top 5. Such a joyous, playful and jaunty body of songs.
