|

The BBC have announced that 6Music is facing closure as part of a radical overhaul of the corporation.
Neil Hannon of The Divine Comedy is a 6Music listener and he has this to say:
"Because they play great music you know and great music you don't. Because of the amazing sessions they pull out of the archives and the new bands they give the first break to. Because of the fantastic, knowledgeable presenters. For all these reasons and more I love BBC 6Music, and I'll be writing to the BBC Trust to say so. If you also want to make your opinions heard, here's the link to the consultation website."
James Hunt's blog has some excellent pointers on how to make your complaints count, as well as an email template that you can send to the BBC.
There are also two online petitions that you can sign:
Petition.fm
38 Degrees
A Facebook Group:
Save 6Music Facebook Group
And more info at this dedicated website: love6music.com
Please help us to keep this wonderful station on air!

HEAR HEAR! I'm devastated about 6Music. But sadly I'm not sure input from an American will do much good, especially as the BBC is barely listening to its own British listeners. |

Amen! I can't believe they're seriously doing this, with one of the reasons being that their djs "lack musical credibility". So Lamaq for example, clearly a true music lover and enthusiast is somehow not as good as, say, Moyles. Hell, Moyles barely even plays music, spending most of his show saying how great he is (he's either delusional or a liar) Why can't they just pay the likes of him less? I'd like to think that if I was on £500000m a year after a while my conscience would take over and I'd say "You know what? Just give me £25k I don't need any more squillions" But I digress, 6music is literally the only station in their cannon that's any good. Well, that and Radio4.
Also why are the Asian network cuts getting less attention? Surely if the BBC wants to represent it's country, both at home and abroad, it should have something for all of it's people? |

Did they actually say that the DJs on 6 Music lacked musical credibility? Even the ones that are, y'know, actual respected musicians? |

A letter in the Radio Times this week sums things up nicely:
"I find it disturbing that the BBC Trust wants BBC 6 Music to employ more credible presenters. Are an ex-member of The Fall, the vocalists for Pulp, Catatonia, Iron Maiden and Fun Lovin' Criminals, a musical historian/documentary film-maker (Don Letts) and three music jounalists (Andrew Collins, Stuart Maconie and Steve Lamacq), not credible enough?"
I think the sad fact is tho these people are clearly experts and true music lovers (that would doubtless include John Peel amongst them if the poor fella hadn't have died) they're not particularly celebrityish, apart from Jarvis and even he isn't exactly a Heat regular is he? The fact is the likes of Moyles, Cotton and Vernon Kaye are the figureheads of shallow arse-licking twatsicles of mainstream popular culture and they generate the kind of crap that the company and industry have stooped to in recent years. A majority of people who listen to Auntie's output aren't interested in bside factoids or musical trivia. They want quick fixes of throwaway pop. The record collector is an endangered species. The anorak is an anomaly. Sad times. |

Yes, because ex-Fall members are automatically hip, cool and credible.
By the way, anyone see Brix Smith-Start on Gok's Fashion Fix ? |

| I don't really know enough about The Fall to comment, but I still agree with the letter. Plenty of people do like The Fall tho. |

| I noticed that Fopp had 'Save 6 Music' displayed on their tills and on their receipts yesterday. Presumably they've been doing this for a while. |
