I heard a long, long time ago that Neil had bought the rights to his back catalogue from Setanta, and was going to re-release the lot?
I had visions of beautiful Pulp-style reissues with extra CDs of demos/outtakes etc, or a big Kraftwerk-style reissue boxset.

Have they been dropped altogether? Or should I expect them sometime in the next... three years or so?

1) There is now a plan to release them next year. (was mentioned in a recent interview)
2) Also a tour with the band has been mentioned. (mentioned at least in Hamburg on Tuesday)

Im a bit surprised to see how much people are getting optimist after reading the Under The Radar interview. What I read was just that Neil hopes to release the previous albums next year.
I talk to Neil before a show last month, and he told me similar things. He said that he really wishes to release something next year, but he dont know if he can actually do it as he already promised this for 5 years now.
However he didnt tell me about the box set mentioned in the interview, but just about a new best of. I suppose the band tour will be promoting this release.

Anyway, a few years ago I was very excited and confident about the reissues and was also dreaming of deluxe releases. However since the various news from DCR, Im getting more and more pessimist.
I can remember they had to ask fans to send them CD-R copies of rare songs, which give me some fears about their abilities to remaster the back catalogue.
They also mentioned the fact they had to rebuild the complete artworks as they no longer have the original templates of the Setanta releases. When I see what they did for reissue artwork of A Secret History (please read about the back cover: We can notice that the bottom part has been reproduced 3 times. It is likely that they needed to fit the picture and they photoshopped it to increase its width.), Im getting worried about the idea of beautiful artwork for the reissue packaging.

Anyway, as many bands now does, I could suggest to the DCHQ to get their fan-club involved (but they sadly no longer have an official fan-club) in the project, by consulting them when the project will be ready before it goes on production. This could avoid many disappointments from fans.

AH! tour with the band??!!
The reissue is a big deal. I think they need time to schedule, arrange, after all there're so many tracks (around 150+_ right?)... The design of everything must go in a better way before they release them "again". Wink Well, after BGTK tour, I would hope Neil has a nice rest, then to think about the reissue in the coming 2011.

Yeah think Neil needs a rest, he's on the road touring & its been a busy year for him, wait until next year & see if its achievable as really it all comes down to costs.

A delux boxset of everything would be wonderful but we'll just have to wait some more......

I only meant with the "band" the version of TDC that happens to exist at that time. Don't know anything really.
What comes to the reissues, I'm pretty confident about it as touring would imply supporting the reissues. But we'll see.. Smile

I'm not bothered if he doesn't do another band gig ever again. I prefer him solo. It really allows his personality to shine through - he's a great natural performer who doesn't need other people on stage to convey how great his material is.

Yes Pulp style reissues of the albums with a bonus disc of b-sides and rarities has been a sexual fantasy of mine for some time. In fact when I'm bored and need to pass the time I sit and think about holding them in my hand while making my way through the discs. Please let it happen. Maybe we can pay in advance and help finance them.

Does this boxset mean another limited edition thing thats value increases ten times if you don't get a hold of it within the first five minutes of release?

Could you please be more precise as to what "them" are.

I've now decided i wanted all the albums on vinyl.
I've almost stopped buying cds. Back to vinyl for good.
Of course there'll never be any TDC LP re-releases.

"What "them" is"

The albums. Reissued. All of them.

You can't get a deluxe edition on vinyl. We need a bonus disc with all the b-sides. You just can't do Vinyl up like that. Have you seen the Pulp reissues? This is why CD's are still vital.

The Pulp re-issues are part of the Universal plan to release their back catalogue in 2 or 3 formats:

  • Download (cheap)
  • CD
  • and sometimes Digipak with bonus CD (deluxe)

A lot of other artists had the same packaging: Black Sabbath, Weezer, Sonic Youth, etc...

As TDC is not under Universal I don't think they will release the same kind of digipak, but they can still release double albums.

And for the LP, I can't see why it is not possible. Sonic Youth released their deluxe editions in 2xCD digipak and 4xLP boxset actually. But once again there was Universal in their back.

Now i've definitely decided on buying LPs again and not cds anymore (when i have the choice between both formats), can someone tell if there's any chance for TDC vinyl re-releases ? I guess it's hugely unlikely so can i start searching here and there to spend ridiculous amounts of money to get those in second-hand condition ?

Suede are currently releasing brilliant ones. I would love to see the divine comedy one's done up the same way.

According to what Neil said in interview last year, I was hoping for some teaser releases this year (like a best of as he told me about this plan in particular). But, the year is still not finished, I'm not that disappointed for the moment and still fell optimistic.

Yeah, I'm not really into Suede (I actually can't stand them at all), but I was quite excited to see that in one of their re-issue they put tracks from acoustic sessions in FNAC stores in France. It was during a FNAC acoustic session in November 1993 that Neil Hannon played for the first time to an audience the songs of Promenade. Seeing Suede releasing this kind of material makes me hopes that the DC sessions could have been recorded as well. It would make a perfect bonus for the Liberation / Promenade re-issues.
In addition of course to all the potential material that could be released as well.

And if DCR have some issues to release proper CD for the moment, releasing teaser material online could be an idea as well to concentrate the fans' interest as well as earning some money.

Not to mention potentially growing the overall TDC fan base.....

When re-issues come out, great things are bound to happen.

Not a single chance to get some TDC LP re-released (?).
Suede did not release their remasters on vinyl either.

I'm waiting for the re-releases on audio cassette. I miss the warm fuzzy analog sound you get from magnetic tape and the fact that the more you play it the crapper the sound gets. There's no tape wobble or anything with CDs - it just sounds crisp and clean and perfect - I mean that just isn't how the artist intended it is it? I can't get my CD player to chew up the CD for love nor money either. Bring back tapes I say.

totally graham

and here's a couple more examples of how to do the box set:

Andy Partidge - famous lover of packaging and "the product"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Fxw6D5qOJw

and I recently bought the 25th anniversary of "So" purely off the back of this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9AcEWMXeQH8

come on guys - once the legal stuff is out the way there is MONEY to be made if the product is right.

Four years on, I reckon it's time for a bump.

Anyone think there's any chance of this ever happening? Surely it can't hurt for Neil to get on the phone to a company like Music on Vinyl to see if they'll repress his stuff?

A proper deluxe re-issue would be nice, but i'd be happy with just a nice new 180gm copy of Promenade. Would have been nice for the 20th anniversary...
