I think the DVD is really disappointing. It's filmed in what seems like poor quality digital and the sound quality is terrible. You can barely tell there's a full orchestra there. I thought it might have been my telly but I played Queen live at Wembley straight afterwards (filmed 20 years ago) and it's a billion times better. Perhaps because it wasn't filmed in digital? The alternative theory is that the gig wasn't very good... In any case, the DVD could have been a whole lot better than it was.

I think it's a mixture of it not being Neil's best gig and poor quality mixing. It was filmed on digital video, incidentally. I think it also shows up rather too well how a TV broadcast or DVD of a live gig exposes flaws that weren't too apparent on the night - what we heard through the PA system on the night didn't sound as lacklustre as it does on the DVD. And watching the DVD really brings across how under-rehearsed the whole thing is. Personally, I think the RAH gig was a far better candidate to be committed to DVD. It was arguably a more prestigious venue, a very special night for Neil, and there had been some lessons learned from the Palladium gig. And, most importantly, the musicians had really hit their stride by this point and played with much more gusto.

I like your comparison with the Queen Live at Wembley DVD - now that one is indeed a cracker!

I still think the DVD is great and I have watched it five or six times.

I still find it hard to believe that they didn't do anything to smooth over the god-awful crash of the drums into the beginning of 'Come Home Billy Bird'. I emember wincing on the night, but it sounds even more crap on the DVD.

Heehee - looking back at this thread and seeing all the jealous girls getting their claws out over the backing singer... I remember it well.

For the record, Andrew Skeet can't play the piano for toffee. His arrangements are crap, he can't sing and he has terrible dress sense. Why I'm not doing his job is beyond me as I could do a million times better. Give me a ring Neil.

He'd win blindfolded. It's a long time since I poked the black and white buttons with my fingers to make the nice noises. Which one's middle C again?
