For listening really. I've never played Commuter Love with Neil (although I've been trying to get him to play it for ages, especially when Squeezy is around!). And the only time I played Absolute Power was when we recorded it. It's my token DC song on my myspace page!
If we're talking playing, then it would be more like....
1. Something For The Weekend
2. Tonight We Fly
3. Billy Bird
4. A Woman of the World
5. Lucy

1) Perfect Lovesong.

After that, it varies from day to day. TDC is pure quality, so it's impossible to pick. It all depends on what occation you're gonna listen to it. For relaxation; for walking; if you're gloomy and blue or struck by sunshine. Ah, anyway. There's an ocean of songs that are worthy of being ranked top 5.

3. If...
4. Sticks & stones
5. Europe by train/Premonition of love (my gut won't say which but there's no voice audible)

Back in 2006, my first post was to put this as my top 5:

5. Someone
4. The Booklovers
3. Lost Property
2. Commuter Love
1. Our Mutual Friend

But in light of the new album I'm now going to revise it to:

5. Sunrise
4. Down In The Street Below
3. Mastermind
2. Our Mutual Friend
1. Commuter Love

Ah, this isn't fair. I think I need to split this into 90's stuff and 2000's stuff, since for some reason in my head that's where I imagination the demarcation of DC. So, from the 90's:
1. Tonight We Fly
2. Songs of Love
3. Don't Look Down
4. Your Daddy's Car
5. Going Downhill Fast

And post-2000:
1. Bad Ambassador
2. Our Mutual Friend
3. Mastermind
4. Assume the Perpendicular
5. A Lady of a Certain Age

Very hard to choose! For now I've settled on:

1. The Plough
2. Tonight We Fly
3. Three Sisters
4. Count Grassi's Passage Over Piedmont
5. Birds of Paradise Farm

Subject to change, of course! Some of the new songs, for instance, might easily become long-term favourites (probably DITSB or the title track), but it's too early to tell right now.

Also, honourable mentions to everything from Absent Friends, because I love that album to bits and feel bad that it's not represented in my top 5 songs Razz

Oh Christ, I'm useless at these lists. I'm on a few Morrissey forums where threads like this are a permanent fixture, and I always 'feel bad' for the songs I leave out, as if I'm neglecting them somehow. Where's the 'crazy' emoticon?

Still, I'll play ball. Off the top of my head, and in no particular order...

1.'Absent Friends'
2.'Life on Earth'
3.'Going Downhill Fast'
4.'Through a Long And Sleepless Night'
5.'Count Grassi's Passage over Piedmont'

All subject to change though, especially that last one. I seem to veer between 'Count Grassi' and 'The Plough' when it comes to my favourite on Victory. And there are, of course, many more that I absolutely love. I'd include you if I could, my dears.

I really tried but I can't get the list down to just five.

So - the whole of Regeneration (but I put that to one side - my love for the album knows no bounds, but it's such an anomally)

As for the rest (in no particular order):

1. Pop Singer's Fear of the Pollen Count - for boogie-ing to on the quiet, instant cheer up music.
2. Going Downhill Fast - makes me smile
3. Middle Class Heroes - they sound suspiciously (worryingly?) familiar
4. Life on Earth - when I go, I'm going out to this one.
5. Sticks and Stones - love the vocal
6. To Die a Virgin - makes me laugh every time ("I'm going to get a bicycle...")
7. Down in the Streets Below - always a pleasure..

Could easily go on - and this list is subject to change (probably weekly)

Okay, I'm about to go all nerdy and analytical about why I love these so much, so bear with me...but if I can't do it here, where can I do it?

1) Light of Day, because once the harpsichord came into its own on this track I began to cry. I don't think a song had ever done that to me before.

2) Timewatching , because the throbbing strings remind me of the best Dvorak http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LAyWqtPHUZw
and it contains the cleverest euphemism for depression I've ever heard haha. No, it's utterly gorgeous.

3) Perfect Lovesong , because the video and song go together so well and because at the 2:08minute mark it sounds like someone leaving their body.

4) Tonight We Fly , well it's a stunner with a really beautiful humanistic theme.

5) I Like, because it's so sweet and the video is hilarious.
Feel free to poke fun at my silly attempts to describe perfect songs Smile

Sounds like a fine idea! Smile

'Light of Day' makes me cry too - because the music is so beautiful and the lyrics are so entirely bleak. (This is not a cloud with a sliver lining I think).

The Dvorak connection is spot on - thanks for the link, what a beautiful thing.

That's why I like this little corner of the internet so much - I learn stuff!

Glad you like the Dvorak. Feel free to musically proselytize to me as well. Everyone, please tell me about some music I need to hear!

I also really love the bassline in The Light of Day. Well, I could go on and on about that song!

Not from me, I fear - I spent 15 years shackled to a 'proper job' so I may as well have been down a hole in the ground so far as music is concerned. DC was the sole survivor, just about Very Happy

I tend to bounce about raving about things only to be faced by disbelief that I have only just discovered them - I cite Philip Glass 'Glassworks' as Exhibit A (but that doesn't stop me from being obsessed with it).

Thought I was going to get stopped for speeding today - Rubric turned up loud on the stereo, got carried away, oops.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=az-0w95-Ugc

(link just in case anyone else has been down a hole too)

Incidentally - does anyone else think the brass on Regeneration (Eye of the Needle in particular) has a Glass-like quality to it? (not like Rubric, obviously)

Hmm Rubric sounds familar but I do not own it. I have heard Glass is very good but not gotten around to listening properly. Perhaps it's time! Thank you.

I know what you mean about being down in a hole without music. My university radio station is having a contest where you email your 10 fave songs of 2012. I struggled coming up with 10 songs! I put some Dirty Projectors, Grizzly Bear, Santigold, and some electronic stuff when I ran out. Either I've fallen behind or nothing is very good this year...

I actually had to look on Wikipedia for all the albums released in 2012, for this contest. Not every small label musician in on this list... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_albums_scheduled_for_release_in_2012 but I was utterly shocked that so many albums came out unnoticed by me.
I mean, crikey, I used to love Of Montreal--how did I not know they released an album?

Well, yes - not officially released ever, I think, (perhaps that could happen to mark the 10th anniversary of the place opening) and not in the Lyric Book.

Poor sad little orphan song. Goes to show what NH can do when properly angry - great lyrics and (despite the shoddy quality of the upload) an amazing vocal.

Sadly, still relevant today. There are still 170 odd prisoners there, most of whom are either cleared for release (but with no prospect of freedom) or have never been charged.

'Try them or let them go'

End of rant.

I am reading the Obamas biography (um, not supposed to be reading anything except school stuff but I snuck this one in for 10min before bedtimes) and while it was scheduled to be closed within a year into his presidency, the idea was shelved.
Pity.
