New user here. Flicking through the forums I couldn't find a poll like this. Would be interesting to know what everyone's fave DC album is. I'm in a Casanova-phase myself, right now, but in all honesty I'd say that A Short Album About Love is probably my favourite complete album.

welcome to the board, johan

for me it's either promenade or regeneration - love 'em both dearly
which is the 'best'? i can't choose - if i can, i'll vote...

followed by liberation, casanova, asaal, absent friends, vftcm & fin in no particular order - some days i prefer one to others

fanfare is ok but in small doses

I really, really cannot decide. Promenade and Casanova are well up there, soon followed by Liberation, Regeneration, and ASAAL. Then Victory, and finally Absent Friends. I don't really know where to put Fanfare though...

To be honest, my favourite changes every time I listen to an album!

Oh, and hello Johan!

Casanova for me, it's the best all round package - a complete story from beginning to end and the start of TDC for me!

Though loving them all dearly, I've put Regeneration because every time I play it, I fall for Neil's voice and lyrics all over again.

I'm torn between Liberation and Promenade . . . and Fin de Siècle is rather lovely. More thinking is in order.

I missed Fin off my list. I swear I put it up there with Promenade and Casanova. But apparently not. But it's up there. Neil's voice in Life On Earth is just lovely...

Hello Johan,

bit too hard to choose to be honest but since A Short Album about love was playing yesterday I'll plump for it.

Thanks, all!

Fascinating results so far.
I always lived with the idea that all DC albums were pretty great, but none of them stood out (and I still think so...), but looking at the results here, it looks like there IS a clear fan's favourite. I love Promenade, but not more than, say, Casanova or ASSAL.

Does anyone know if it received more critical acclaim at the time of release than the others did? I only became a fan in the late 90s, so I wouldn't know. I always thought that DC were a band who missed the big breakthrogh because they never released an album that clearly stood out (from their other albums that is) in terms of critical acclaim or commercial success, like, say, Different Class or Dog Man Star.

Promenade for me, but after that it's all a scramble to second place. Actually I've been listening to Fin a lot recently, I keep forgetting just how brilliant it is.

ASAAL for me, it's the record that got me into TDC in the first place.
7 tracks of perfection, some of Neil's best lyrics combined with some of Joby's best arrangements both for and outside of TDC.

Promenade, followed by Absent Friends and A Short Album About Love. Absent Friends is my favorite album by anyone of this decade.

Yes, some shocking results here so far.
But then again, Casanova could be everyone's 2nd or 3rd favourite album.

What a surprise! "Promenade" romps to victory, no pun intended. Yawn.

"Liberation", "Casanova" and "Regeneration" for me, depending on mood. Too close to call. Depends on day, etc.

I voted Short Album as a whole beautiful entity, but I have to say, Casanova is behind only by a nose.

Cheers to you who said "seven tracks of perfection" re: ASAAL
And, really? Promenade???

Smile Not judgin' though.

(4/11) and...just listened to Liberation from start to finish for the first time in years, and am in love again.... Laughing

Voted Absent Friends in the end but it could've been any one of them (except fanfare :p). But Absent friends win over Regeneration and Casanova by a nose hair Laughing

Promenade seems a clear favourite to win but I think it has some stanout songs and some which I can live without. Confused

Fin de Siecle is my fav. I guess that was Neil's grandiose masterpiece. Well my list at this moment (it always changes):

1 Fin De Siecle
2 Casanova/Liberation
3 Promenade/Absent Friends
4 Short Album
5 Victory
6 Regeneration
.
.
9 Fanfare

& I can't wait Bang

Wow! I'm surprised Promenade is so popular. I actually re-disocvered its brilliance only about 6 months ago, voted for it without hesitating or knowing that almost 1/2 the voters had picked it also....Anyone know why Promenade's such a fan fovourite? I can't discount how much I love Casonova and Absent Friends also.

Tricky... I eventually settled on Absent Friends, because it was a lot of songs from that album that really got me interested in TDC (from watching a lot of the videos on youtube from the Palladium DVD, which of course had a lot of then-new AF material). But Victory was the first album I heard in full, so it's special too... and you can't deny that Promenade is a masterpiece... and all the other albums are excellent too, etc., etc... Razz

All is good! Degree finished, finally, and off for a year of PGCE-ing and then into the wide world of teaching young delinquents about world music and walking basslines! It'll be a blast!

What have I missed??!

In what sense? With regard to my life not a great deal. Degree finished... milling about, making a little headway in games critics circles, and my girlfriend Deb and I are approaching out 2nd anniversary in a fortnight.

Neil had a weird moustache for a bit but it's gone now.

s**t's going down in Gaza.

The image of Neil/moustache conjours an image of an Edward Elgar-type figure wearing shades and crooning Land of Hope and Glory. Please thell me that's not an album i've missed.

Congratulations on the approaching anniversary Smile come to think of it, me and the other half aren't too far of 2 years... *checks calendar*

and wow, Gaza? so that's where all the exiled BBers are? Gosh, i've been gone a while...

There was the cricket album, I assume you know of that one. Smile

So you're going to be a music teacher! That's great. And congrats on your upcoming anniversary! Remember to get her something well early, as I've two weeks left and I don't know what to get.

oh yes, i know *the cricket one*...

haha, you may be the most enthusiastic person yet to my plans to be a music teacher!! mostly i'm greeted by quizzical, stupefied looks, as if i look a bit like Mother Theresa, or Diana's chauffer. Well, I'm allegedly taking her to Copenhagen, got a couple of months left i think to sort it so must get to it!

and yay for milling Very Happy milling is an excellent use of time. Hope things fall into place nicely soon.

So, yes, enough of this TWEE spamming! Casanova? I don't know no Casanova?! But I do know the one about the bus...

For me it's probably Casanova. Or A short Album About Love. Or Bang Goes the Knighthood. Or Promenade. Maybe Liberation. And Regeneration. or Fin De Siecle. One of those or else Absent Friends or Victory for the Comic Muse.

Unless he comes up with something incredible, I think Promenade will be seen as his signature album in years to come. Surprised

It would have to be incredible to top Promenade in many fans' affections.

His last few albums have not been bad, but say, hypothetically you took your 3 favourite songs from the last 4 albums (BGTK, VFTCM, AF and Regeneration) and put them all together (and yes, I know they're different stylistically but just imagine this compilation had a coherent motif running through them so they gelled). Would such an album top Promenade?

I have kind of resigned myself to the fact that Neil won't make another album as fluid as Promenade or Fin De Siecle (my favourite), and that his new albums will all have tracks that don't quite work and or are outright abominations. And I would be happy if each new album contained 3 or 4 songs of the quality of Down In The Street Below, Lost Art of Conversation, Lady Of A Certain Age, Count Grassi's Passage, Our Mutual Friend, Lost Property and Mastermind.

Mind you, Dylan came up with Blood On The Tracks later on in life so you never know what Neil may conjure up. Smile
