Would you have chosen it?
I know a few people (including me) don't really like the song but are we a very small minority? Let's have a poll to find out!
I think the song 'Absent Friends' stands head and shoulders above the rest in terms of most obvious single.
Wonder how the singles are chosen. Perhaps we, the humble BBers, could choose single number two!

Can't think of any other song that would be better as a first (or any other) single.

Absent friends is far too 'Neil' (or rather Scott Walker) to go down well with non-fans.

Definitely the right choice for first single! Perfectly single orientated in terms of style and sound.

Absent Friends would be a TERRIBLE single choice, in my opinion. As Chordmeister said, it's a fan song.

Happy Goth might appeal to the Radio 2 crowd. Charmed Life is a very sweet song and I think would make a good single. Billy Bird was probably a reasonable choice, because it's the poppiest sounding, and those are the singles that tend to be released. On the other hand, a friend of mine was really not keen on TDC based on Neil's more "comedy" songs but has liked more serious numbers...

Happy Goth will obviously be 2nd single. And Absolute Power will feature somewhere hopefully. :-)

Teasing the non-diehard fans is the goal, & only CHBB could (have) do(ne) that. Not the greatest single for most of us here but the most logical indeed for the masses.

I haven't seen the video anywhere outside that website, and on the CD I bought.. Nowhere! No music channels, no music shows, nothing.

Not even 'The Box' - and they'll play anything.

It's a great video too... real shame.

Excellent production! Didn't expect the song to turn out this good, exspecially with the lovely female voice in the chorus. Masterpiece.

Well, fair enough, CHBB seems to have got the consensus as the best choice for single.
Charmed Life's a great song but a bit long and complex to be a single. Plus it would be tempting fate. A song about how brilliant Neil's life has been. Imagine if it failed to chart and caused the record company to drop him. Ooh, the irony!
I don't really understand the criticisms voiced by some of the title track. Singles need to be reasonably short, memorable, rousing and deeply tuneful. Surely 'Absent Friends' succeeds in all those categories?

PS I can't work out how to vote in the BB polls! Am I being a bit dim?
PPS Ignore the PS. I've finally managed to do it!

consider it ignored.
having said that, it's hard to deny that young man with unhealthy tan is generally quite dim!
